Orientation

Coaching vs. psychotherapy: which one fits?

Many people are unsure whether their concern belongs in psychological coaching, in counseling, or in psychotherapy. This overview helps you understand the differences clearly — without making a clinical assessment of your situation.

The difference in one sentence

Psychotherapy treats diagnosed mental health conditions. Coaching and psychologically informed conversation support help people without a diagnosis sort through their thoughts, make decisions, and develop new ways forward.

Where do the differences actually lie?

When psychological coaching may fit

  • You feel overwhelmed, but there is no mental health condition in the picture.
  • You are facing a decision, a transition, or a change.
  • You want to better understand relationships, roles, or recurring patterns.
  • You are looking for a protected space to think — without a health-insurance record or a diagnosis.

When psychotherapy is the right path

  • You have a diagnosed mental health condition or a well-founded suspicion of one.
  • Symptoms like persistent low mood, anxiety, or trauma noticeably weigh on your daily life.
  • You are in an acute crisis or you have thoughts of harming yourself.

In acute crises

In an acute crisis or with suicidal thoughts, Mitgetragen is not the right service. Please contact a crisis line in your country, or in Germany call the Telefonseelsorge at 0800 111 0 111 (free, 24/7) or in an emergency 112.

How Mitgetragen fits in

Mitgetragen is a psychologically informed online coaching and reflection service by Paulina Heck. It does not replace psychotherapy or acute crisis support. The focus is precise listening, clarifying questions, and next steps that hold up in everyday life.

Frequently asked questions

Is psychological coaching the same as counseling?
The terms overlap. Both work with people without a diagnosis, are freely accessible, and are not medical treatment. Mitgetragen describes itself as a coaching and reflection service.
Can I do coaching while I am in therapy?
It is generally possible but should be coordinated with your therapist so the two spaces stay clearly separate.
Who pays for coaching?
Coaching is usually self-paid. Health insurance does not cover it because it is not medical treatment.
